Travel nursing has many benefits – exploring new cities and states, trying out new experiences, and learning new skills to enhance your career. However, before you start your dream assignment, you need housing. Finding housing can be stressful, especially if you’re a first-time traveler. Don’t fret; we have created a list to make your housing search seamless and stress-free.

Airbnb

With over 6 million listings in more than 100,000 cities worldwide, Airbnb dominates the market when it comes to rentals for travelers. You may have used Airbnb when planning vacations, but did you know you can rent long-term, too? What makes Airbnb great for travelers is that you can narrow your search by housing type and price range, view reviews and photos of the place, and directly message the homeowner. Along with booking housing, Airbnb offers “Experiences,” where you can browse tours and activities provided by locals throughout the area, perfect for exploring your new location.

Furnished Finder

Designed specifically for travel healthcare professionals, Furnished Finder offers over 250,000 fully furnished apartments, houses, condos, and rooms nationwide. Unlike Airbnb, rentals are on a pay-by-month basis and do not contain any commission or booking fees. All property owners must pass a background check, ensuring a safe renting experience. Furnished Finder also provides rental assistance, moving services, and a money-back guarantee if you’re unsatisfied with your rental or experience a contract cancellation.

Apartments.com

Apartments.com primarily offers apartment rentals but also features townhomes and condos. Though it may not have as many listings as other sites, it provides month-to-month payments, unlike Airbnb or Vrbo. This company also runs apartmentfinder.com and apartmenthomeliving.com for more housing options.

Vrbo

Similar to Airbnb, Vrbo is another popular site for rentals while traveling. They have over 2 million listings and flexible cancellation policies if plans change. Owned by Expedia, they offer rewards for frequent bookings, which are redeemable for future bookings on Vrbo, Expedia, or Hotels.com. Before booking with Vrbo, double-check the cancellation policy, as some hosts may have a no-refund policy in place for cancellation.

Extended Stay America

While a hotel room may not be at the top of your list of housing during your assignment, Extended Stay America offers apartment-like suites with full kitchens and amenities such as gyms, pools, spas, and Wi-Fi access in over 700 locations nationwide. Parking is free, and pets are welcome with an additional fee. With Extended Stay America, you can rent out for several weeks or months at a time, and they offer additional discounts if booking for 30 days or more.

Travel Nurse Housing

Travel Nurse Housing is Furnished Finder’s sister site, focusing more on housing for travel nurses. The site currently offers over 60,000 fully furnished listings with no booking fees. Like Furnished Finder, you book directly with the property owners, and Travel Nurse Housing does not get involved with any transactions, including lease agreements or rental payments, to help cut down fees. Being that Furnished Finder manages Travel Nurse Housing, you may stumble upon duplicate listings when browsing for housing. However, Travel Nurse Housing caters to healthcare travelers, so their listings are more likely suitable for your needs.

Homestay

Homestay is a unique site for a more affordable housing option that connects travelers with locals, offering short- or long-term accommodations. This option is excellent for first-time travelers or those who may not be comfortable traveling alone. You will have a more “at home” feeling since you will share a home with someone. By staying with someone who knows the area, you’ll get insider knowledge on the best restaurants, sites, and shops to go to during your stay.

Kopa

Kopa offers a variety of rentals, from unfurnished studios to fully equipped luxury apartments. They provide any length of stay between 1 to 12 months and help find a roommate if you’re looking for one. When searching for a rental, you can choose important amenities to narrow down the results for your budget. Kopa has over 20,000 listings in 100 cities, and while the options may be limited, you are more apt to find a place to stay to fit your budget better.

Zillow

Known primarily as a home-buying site, Zillow also offers rentals. Adding “short term” to your search parameters lets you find rentals in your city. Though there may be fewer listings, it’s a helpful tool if you’re still searching. Zillow provides information on school ratings, areas of interest, travel times to your facility, and walk scores, helping you get familiar with your assignment city.

Finding suitable housing doesn't have to be a daunting task. By utilizing these top housing sites, you can streamline your search process and focus more on what truly matters – making the most out of your travel nursing experience.
